This Plate Welder Apprenticeship will be based at either our Ellesmere Port workshop or at the Stanlow Refinery. You will work alongside our highly experienced trades person with the welding of steel Tank plates, welding procedure specifications, and welding of pipework in line with weld preparation of the working area.

Plate welder apprenticeship, this role will be based at either our Ellesmere Port workshop or at the Stanlow Refinery, the programme will include what is listed below as part of the on-the-job training along with the detail listed within the apprenticeship standard set out by the Engineering college. You will work alongside one of our highly experience trades person gaining the knowledge and skills needed throughout the programme.

  • Welding of steel Tank plates (butt welds, fillet welds) in line with Weld Procedure Specifications
  • Welding of  pipework in line with Weld procedure specifications (butt welds, fillet welds)
  • Preparation of working area (barriers, access routes, cables, sheeting, signage etc)
  • The setting up of A/C and D/C machines
  • The storage and treatment of electrodes
  • Recognition of material to be welded
  • Use of power tools in the back grinding of welds
  • Use of welding tools and equipment
  • Use of gas cutting equipment (burning gear)
  • Maintaining and checking own small tools and equipment
  • Reading and interpreting drawings
  • Knowledge of effects of climate conditions on welds
  • Knowledge of safety precautions and risks associated with tasks
  • Be proficient in more than one of the welder coding qualification (multi-coded). MMA, semi-automatic, automatic
  • Use of arc/air equipment to back gouge butts to clean metal
  • Be able to mark out and repair welded joints
  • Knowledge of pre-heating
  • Competent in the correct sequence of welding assemblies
  • Working at heights (from time to time)
  • Working in confined spaces (from time to time)

Level 3 Diploma in Engineering,based at The Engineering College, Monks Ferry, Birkenhead  full time for the first year, then move to company on a day release programme. 

Once achieved the 4 year apprenticeship you would then be classed as a trades person and work along side the wider Wood Uk teams within our storage tank team, with the option to work in Ellesmere port or on one of our other UK/Ireland sites.
