About: Apprenticeships
An apprenticeship is a paid job where the employee learns and gains valuable experiences. Alongside on-the-job training, apprentices spend at least 20% of their working hours completing classroom-based learning with a college, university or training provider which leads to a nationally recognised qualification.
To start an apprenticeship, you cannot be in full-time education, however, apprenticeships do have equivalent educational levels which can help you to assess which level might be suitable for you.
Levels of Apprenticeship
Level | Equivalent Level Qualification | |
Intermediate | 2 | GCSE |
Advanced | 3 | A level |
Higher | 4 and 5 | Foundation degree and above |
Degree | 6 and 7 | Bahelor’s or Master’s degree |
Intermediate Apprenticeships – Level 2
These are ideal for people aged 16 and over who are looking to enter the workforce and have left full time education. You will receive a Level 2 NVQ which is equivalent to 5 GCSE’s or a BTEC diploma. You will work a minimum of 30 hours per week, whilst studying for the remainder of the time. Intermediate apprenticeships take between 12 -18 months.
Advanced Apprenticeships – Level 3
To undertake an advanced apprenticeship most employers require 5 GCSE’s (including English and Maths). On completion, you will receive an NVQ Level 3. You will work a minimum of 30 hours per week, whilst learning the theory for the remainder of the time. Advanced apprenticeships take between 2 to 4 years.
Higher Apprenticeships – Level 4, 5
Higher apprenticeships are ideal for people who have completed their A Levels or equivalent and want to continue their education through a different route than university. You must have 5 GCSE’s including English and Maths and a level 3 qualification (such as A Levels or a BTEC). The subjects you have already studied may have to be related to the apprenticeship you want to undertake, depending on the course and the employer.
Degree Apprenticeships – Level 6, 7
Degree apprenticeships are ideal for people who want to gain an undergraduate or masters degree whilst working and being paid. People who already have degree can also undertake a degree apprenticeship, if the area of study is significantly different. You will spend most of your time working with 1 or 2 days spent studying at university. Overall, they take between 3 – 6 years to complete.
