A tailored play for Sixth Form (Years 12 & 13) students

Apprenticeship Support by Be More has commissioned a third play with a difference. While previous plays explored apprenticeships and why to consider them, this is more hard hitting. Based on research with sixth form students, it is more playbook than play. It shows them how to apply for apprenticeships successfully.

Apprenticeships are competitive and getting one is being taken very seriously by sixth form pupils across the Liverpool City Region. The third play in the series commissioned by Apprenticeship Support by Be More focusses on the step by step process of applying for one. The play has been created and is performed by Open the Door Theatre in Education. Its important content has been researched extensively. Sixth form students from across every area of the Liverpool City Region (LCR) were invited to take part in the consultation. Key employers and learning providers in the area have also provided valuable insights into what makes an ideal candidate.

“We have had great feedback from both the audience for the play and the organisations that are key stakeholders in the apprenticeship agenda.  This is a play designed to deliver the application steps for potential apprentices in a clear and concise manner. For sixth form pupils who are prepared to compete for their first apprenticeship, this will give them the playbook to success,” explains Bob Towers, Director of Open the Door Theatre in Education.

The Play ‘Apprenticeships – Research, Decide, Apply’ sees a variety of people informing Olivia about the apprenticeship application process. Importantly, it highlights how to find apprenticeships in the LCR and apply for them. It also provides useful information on how to improve your chances of being successful. These are informed by employers across the region looking for fresh talent and using apprenticeships to recruit their future workforce. “One of the key messages we have built into this play is the need for applicants to include not only what they do, but why they do it. A scene where a recruitment manager sifts through CVs is a realistic insight into the shortlisting process. Values based recruitment predominates, so extra-curricular activity, and the motivation for it, can be as important as academic qualifications. Employers are looking for good people with the right characteristics that they can shape into valuable employees during their apprenticeship.” reflects Bob.

This is a serious play with short scenes and a summary at the end. It is a step by step guide to applying and signposts a range of valuable website resources to free advice from career advisors.  It covers how to prepare and conduct yourself in an interview and reviewing your social media activity.
