Beth Tweddle is Apprenticeship Graduation Ceremony Guest speaker
Beth Tweddle will be the guest speaker at next month’s Apprenticeship Graduation Ceremony. The inspirational Olympic gymnast will be talking about the highs and lows of her career Journey. She has now retired from competitive elite gymnastics and runs a company that gets children trying the sport.
Beth Tweddle changed the sport of female gymnastics and became a household name in the process. She continues to raise the profile of gymnastics and the benefits it brings. Establishing Beth Tweddle Gymnastics in 2010, her company works with schools and has her academy sites and purpose built sites with the aim of getting every child to try gymnastics. “They may love it, they may hate it, but we want them to give it a go and see,” says Beth.
When Beth takes to the stage to speak to Apprentices she will be sharing her experiences of her exciting career. She’ll talk about the Olympic medal win in front of the home crowd in London 2012, the training that got her there and the Tweddle move on the uneven bars that became her calling card.
She’ll also talk about the lows, the disappointments after hours and hours of hard training, and what she learnt from them. Beth is very competitive naturally. So a 4th position in Beijing was disappointing for her, despite being a good performance by most people’s standards. “You learn from every experience whether it’s a high or a low,” reflects Beth. “When you have the lows, you learn how to cope, to pick yourself back up. This doesn’t just apply to competitive sport, it’s an attitude for success, whether it’s in your career, personal or family life.”
Beth has combined sporting success with an education. Like apprentices, she has balanced practical training with formal education. “I always felt it was important to have qualifications in case gymnastics didn’t work out. There is always the threat of serious injury that can halt your career, so you need something to fall back on,” explains Beth.
After retiring from gymnastics she took on other challenges, running her new business, Beth Tweddle Gymnastics, and raising money for charity. She is a patron of Claire House and a trustee for Switch the Play Foundation. You may have watched her television appearances on the Chase and Dancing on Ice. Now an accomplished skater, she won the first series she participated in with professional skater Daniel Whiston and went back for a second series with Lukasc Rozycki. “This was a great new challenge and fun. Training only 2 hours a day was less vigorous than my Olympic training and I learn a host of new techniques,” recalls Beth.
