School is behind you, and you’d like a job that provides world-class professional training. That, on its own, would be a great career plan. But imagine if you could combine that with something you are already passionate about – perhaps music, animal care, or even gaming!

This is what an Army, RAF, or Royal Navy career could offer you. And there’s more. Travel the world and earn while you gain valuable qualifications. Secure a promising long-term career path. Earn good money and save while your living expenses are met. What’s not to love?

An apprenticeship is an excellent way to join the armed forces and become a specialist in a particular field.

A Life on The Ocean Seas

Everyone joining the Navy as a junior sailor will automatically be enrolled on a level 2 (intermediate) apprenticeship. You can choose a route best suited to your talents, interests, and aspirations. Roles vary immensely, from studying and working in seamanship to engineering and logistics.

Guaranteed a Job

The Royal Navy ranks among the country’s top 100 apprenticeship employers and is graded ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted. After your first 12-18 months and the completion of your apprenticeship, you are guaranteed a job.

Starting Salaries of £37,000

If you have already gained a level 3 Diploma or hold A-levels in Mathematics or any other STEM subject, you can start on a level 3 apprenticeship with the Royal Navy. This can lead you into an engineering career; if you are recruited at a higher rank, you can expect a starting salary of more than £37,000. If successful, you can decide whether to focus on submarine, marine, or weapon engineering.

Progression Opportunities

During your career journey with the Royal Navy, there are plenty of opportunities to progress. Higher-level apprenticeships are also on offer, giving you civilian-accredited qualifications and professional training. If you are a high flier, you’re likely to be given the opportunity to train as an officer.

Defending Britain’s Skies

A career in the Royal Air Force will involve defending our skies and working with partners across the globe to bolster the security of the UK and its allies. The RAF also uses intelligence, reconnaissance, and surveillance to counter threats before any damage is sustained. Working among its ranks is an important role.

22 Different Apprenticeships

Apprentices can start their career with the RAF in one of more than 20 different job functions. Diverse opportunities range from physical training instructors to intelligence analysts. At age 16, with no qualifications, you could still be looking at a job training as a chef, driver, or gunner. With GCSEs and A-levels in the RAF, you could consider a role in cyberspace communication, electrical engineering, or even dental nursing.

Thrill Seeking

The RAF actually encourages you to apply based on your interests – including gaming and thrill-seeking! And whatever route you opt for, comprehensive training will follow. Depending on your job, you could eventually be involved in space operations or rapid deployment of personnel across the globe.

Kudos of the RAF

Signing on with the RAF means you will be part of a prestigious organisation, playing a significant role in national security. Top-notch training is coupled with working in cutting-edge technology, resulting in a rewarding and exciting career. As with working for the Navy, your living expenses will be met, so you’ll be able to make the most of your leave and holidays.

At All Levels

The Army offers level two, three, and four apprenticeships. Roles range from animal care to business administration and engineering; 95% of recruits enroll with the Army via an apprenticeship. There are even fully funded opportunities to acquire higher qualifications equivalent to a bachelor’s degree.

Becoming an Officer

To become an army officer, you do not need a degree. In fact, during your career journey, you will be able to apply for a degree-level apprenticeship specialising in management and leadership.

The classroom and traditional university courses aren’t for everyone. After A-levels, you could start on a salary of £28,000 at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst instead. You can expect to earn more than £34,000 once you hold a position of authority. This is called a commission and you get a formal document of appointment signed by King Charles.

Beyond The Battlefield

Many recruits join the Army because they are adventurous. Becoming a qualified instructor or leader in an outdoor or training activity is a reality with an armed forces career. Many Army career paths will allow you to take your personal and professional interests to the next level.

Professional Qualifications

Every Army job comes with the opportunity to gain professional qualifications and skills. For example, Chartered Engineer status is possible if your career progresses within the Royal Electrical Engineers or Royal Engineers.
