A training provider in Liverpool has helped to boost the management skills at a leading safety consultancy firm through higher-level apprenticeships.

Paulo Oliveira is a successful graduate, holding both an MSc in Engineering and a BSc (Hons) in Electrical Engineering. It was only after he completed his Apprenticeship in leadership and management with Training Strategies that he acquired the full confidence and skills set to be a highly effective manager.

Forty-one-year-old Paulo enrolled on an Apprenticeship in Leadership and Management with Training Strategies to develop his management skills and take his career to the next level.

Promotion after Apprenticeship

The level 5 programme enables participants to be highly effective in managing the operations of a department. Areas covered include leadership and management skills, alongside personal qualities that contribute to ensuring team performance.

Before the course, Paulo was an engineering manager with his employer Engineering Safety Consultants.  After completing the Apprenticeship, and as a result of the skills he gained, he was promoted to associate director.

He enjoys the challenges of his new role and says: “Completing my Apprenticeship means I am now confident in all the day-to-day responsibilities that now fall under my remit. The Apprenticeship has challenged and altered my view of what I believed management and leadership are.”

Tips and direction from Training Strategies

Paulo added his praise for the experience of working with his Training Strategies assessor:

“Throughout the entire Apprenticeship, my tutor Tony provided clear directions on the requirements of the course.  He even gave me tips on how to cope with stressful study periods while balancing full-time employment.”

Training Strategies work across a broad selection of industries. The courses they offer range from pre-employment training through to professional development. Their clients include Hermes, Pontins and JobCentre Plus. Matthew Lynch, quality director from the training provider, says:

“We take a dynamic approach to training in the workplace. Paulo is a great example of how we boost employability and effectiveness within existing workforces.  The ultimate aim is to help our clients grow their businesses and raise the bar for performance.  Engineering Safety Consultants Ltd is a great example of how the Apprenticeship Levy can be used to have a real impact on day-to-day operations and succession planning.”
