If you receive your GCSE results and they aren’t what you hoped for, don’t despair! If you didn’t get the results you need to stay on at school for A-levels or start college in September 2025, there are plenty of positive options available to you.

You can speak to your chosen school or college and ask if they will still accept you to pursue A-levels or the course you want to take, possibly alongside some GCSE re-sits if required. Or you could change track and pursue an apprenticeship, choose a different college course, or study for re-sits while working. We recommend taking your time, exploring all your options, and discussing them with your family, school, and a careers advisor, if possible.

Not all engineering jobs require a degree or even A-levels. Career paths include electrical, marine and computing. Securing an entry-level position can be competitive, so consider pursuing an internship over the summer or volunteering with a reputable organisation like Engineers Without Borders.

Could it be for you? English, maths and science skills will help you get a foothold in the sector. Without a degree, and sometimes without A-levels, you could still find an entry-level role as a trainee or technician. Being logical, analytical and curious helps just as much as qualifications.

Do you have a passion for a quirky career? In that case, our feature on unusual apprenticeships might inspire you! Because they are more unusual, current apprenticeship vacancies in these fields may be scarce. But you can advance your career by researching different companies in the industries and approaching them speculatively. Could it be for you? The careers in our blog are just examples of pathways into your niche. If you are looking for an unconventional career or have an unusual hobby that could translate into a job, check to see what relevant apprenticeships are available. Then put the work into finding employers in that sector.

Scientists can genuinely have a global influence. Careers in biology and chemistry go way beyond the laboratory. Our article about working in chemistry explores careers as a teacher or in forensics, while the one about biology outlines how this field might lead to a career in conservation, beauty, or wellbeing.

Could it be for you? If you get good grades in your science GCSEs and are interested in any of these chemistry or biology-based careers, it’s advisable to do A-levels in the relevant subjects. 

Some of you will already know that you are looking for something different, perhaps being your own boss. Increasingly, young people with creative flair and entrepreneurial spirit are turning their hobbies into business ventures. Fast forward to September 2025, when you’re back in the classroom at school or college. If you are smart, you are already thinking about what to do once you have completed A-levels or your chosen course. To truly succeed, seize every opportunity to gain hands-on experience.

Why is work experience crucial? Employers are more likely to take you seriously if you have practical experience. Even if it is not directly related to the job you are after, today’s employers are investing in workplace skills and experience as much as qualifications. Paid or voluntary experience shows you are proactive.

Why are interviews invaluable? You could strike lucky! Imagine being called in and offered the first job you apply for. It can happen, but sadly not for most of us.
